A very exciting opportunity has arisen to manage a highly progressive, privately owned farm on the Southill Estate as Farm Manager.
The Estate is owned by Mr C E S Whitbread and various Trusts and has been in the ownership of the Whitbread family since 1795 and is situated South East of Bedford and includes properties within the villages of Southill, Stanford, Cardington, Elstow and other adjoining villages. The Farm is run by Whitbread Farms Limited and amounts to a gross acreage of 3,347 which presently includes 2,466 acres of arable, 368 acres of grassland, 505 acres of HLS/conservation areas and miscellaneous land. The arable enterprise operates a Conservation Agriculture System, complemented with CTF and a keen interest in technology. Cropping aims to broaden diversity and includes Cover and Catch crops with a direct drilling strategy. The Farm lies within a highly commercial business which operates a proactive training policy.
The Farm Manager is fully responsible on a day to day basis for running the farming business, growing the crops, looking after the British White cattle, completing the applications for grant and support, dealing with health and safety and compliance for all current regulations and all other duties to assist in the smooth running of the farming business and the Southill Estate. As such you would be targeted to minimise the cost of production per tonne of all crops grown within the agreed management system, ensure the Farm is fully cropped, manage the staff and ensure that there is a profitable business but not losing sight of the conservation aims of the owners. Importantly the Farm is part of a privately owned Estate and from time to time the overall position on the Estate and the family’s requirements will need to be considered when decisions are made.
Experience of Conservation Farming (Regenerative Agriculture), will be useful although not essential. The successful candidate will need to be enthusiastic, well researched and willing to embrace this style of farming practice.
The Farm Manager must be focussed, committed, experienced and willing to deal with the administration as well as practical work in support of the farm staff. The Farm staff are a small team and form part of the Southill Estate Team, and as such it is essential that you will be a team player in all aspects of your duties and be commercially focused while not losing sight of traditional values and the bigger picture of the Estate.
It may be that you are currently running a smaller business and are looking to gain a role to “expand” your farming career or you have been an assistant on a larger business and looking to take on your own responsibilities with a progressive farming business such as The Southhill Estate.
Remuneration Package: The salary is very competitive and includes a house, pension, life cover, farm vehicle and holiday entitlement of 25 working days per annum plus Bank Holidays.
