Our client is a major indoor hydroponic farming company, which grows leafy salads and fresh herbs in a totally controlled indoor environment. The company believes that indoor farming will be the future of farming because of the substantial environmental benefits that it brings (95% less water, reduced land footprint, reduced ‘food miles’). They are planning to expand very rapidly both within the UK and overseas and their vision is to be the leading indoor farming company in the world. The second farm is planned to start operating in Q1 2022.
The Role
As Senior Agronomist you will be responsible for all elements of crop cultivation within the site (including climate control, crop protection, nutrition, irrigation and pest control). You will provide technical direction for all input parameters, including systems of irrigation, lighting, air and nutrient delivery. You will provide leadership and motivation to assigned trained horticultural resources, developing world class data collection, collation and presentation procedures. You will take primary responsibility for achieving and surpassing requirements for yield, flavour, appearance, shelf life and overall health of all crops produced, creating a continuous improvement culture to support business requirements for safety, quality and productivity. You will create and maintain an ongoing program of trials and experiments to support the delivery of both saleable crop and R&D intelligence. As the R&D lead for the site you will shape and advise the future strategic plans of the business.
The Individual
We are seeking a first-class Agronomist or Senior Grower with experience of working in a controlled environment setting, ideally with leafy green crops. Extensive experience of setting up and carrying out trials, using the data gained to improve specific crop characteristics. A background in R&D or technical development within a successful commercial setting, with strong data management and influencing skills. A strong team ethic and high levels of personal responsibility are an essential element for the successful candidate, this is a great opportunity to join a growing business in an exciting sector of food production.
